I'm a french guy using SME server for personal use. Here is a sum-up of my configuration :

• Server is a desktop compaq EVO with Celeron @1.6 GHz + 512MB of memory + 250MB internal HD Computer. chosen for his price (ebay...) and his compacity.
• 350 MB external USB disk.
• SME server is used in gateway mode between my adsl box and wifi access point
• Wifi-N access point : Belkin N1 Wireless Router F5D8233
• Printer : Canon Pixma IP5500
• Scanner : Canon Snapscan 1212U

SME server is used for these tasks :

• storing all personal datas (documents, photos, video, ... )
• most important, managing automatically all backups using affa on USB disk
• windows domain server for my laptops to have data access protection and profile backup on server
• exchange-like server using zarafa (so great ... ), to be able to use outlook with all data stored on server.
• vpn (openvpn) access from internet to access to all this stuff in a secure way, and also, I must admit, have full access to internet from work
• smtp server with advanced spam filtering ( clamav & spamassassin)
• web proxying to speed-up internet and decrease drastically web caches on local machines.
• web filtering for everybody in the family and especially childrens (dansguardian)
• printer server : wireless access to printer from laptops
• scanner server : wireless scanner access from laptops using sane
• Synchronisation of data (mails, contacts, calendar, etc...) and push mail via Wifi for my Qtek9100 smartphone
• joomla web server with internet access for family use
