SME Server 8 Release Analysis

Status: Pre-Alpha SME Server Version 8 will be the next major version of SME Server, and will involve upgrading the base to CentOS5 (Scientific Linux 5 at the moment, as CentOS5 is not publicly available). We are just in the very early stages of testing, but so far things look very good - not nearly as many changes as were required from going from a base of RedHat 7.3 in SME Server 6.x to a base of CentOS4 in SME Server 7.x.

RPM Sources: SME Server uses rpms from a variety of sources. Our goal is to not have to modify any upstream rpms, and to push any modifications upstream, which we think are necessary. This is best for everyone, and the result is that we spend less time patching rpms. Our main upstream sources for rpms are:

  • CentOS5/SL5 (And their upstream is RHEL5)
  • Fedora EPEL 5 (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux)
  • Fedora Core 6
  • Fedora Extras 6
  • RPMForge (Dag Wieers, Dries Verachtert)
  • ATrpms (Axel Thimm)
  • Fedora Core Rawhide
  • SME Server Developers - We package many rpms no one else does

Packages in SME Server 8: This is a preliminary analysis of what rpms will be required in SME Server 8, and where we should be sourcing the package. This list is definitly subject to change, as RHEL5 is not even released yet. Versions are left out as they will change too often to update here.
