Hi Jester, Zarafa has known errors for over a year with PHP 5.2.x. (see Google). My up-to-date sme8 server runs PHP 5.1.6 out of the box and works fine with zarafa 6.30.9. (latest -1). This means the contrib is not broken if you use standard SME and/or release candidates for zarafa.
Better solution to leave the contrib 'working' but add a note to take care when using PHP 5.2.x?
Update: Just installed zarafa 6.40.0 RC2 on a new sme8 server, it works as expected.
Hi Eastend99,
The next beta of sme WILL have PHP 5.2.x, see: bugzilla:5170, so when it comes out there will be a problem.

I think that's a matter of taste. If you feel it more appropriate like that, put it back and add the note. Just as long as people are informed one way or the other.
